Real 3D Layered Photograph in Paper Tole style - F/A 18F SUPER HORNET
DESIGN:
This product is a unique, entirely homemade variation of traditional Paper Tole (similar also to three-dimensional Decoupage). Traditional designs and available papercraft kits normally use drawings and artwork; this complete product is composed of multiple separate layers of actual photographic prints. This gives an artistic impression of a 3D Photograph with real perspective. General and fine details including the undercarriage and weaponry are cut and layered separately from each other in this one-of-a-kind product style.
PHOTOGRAPHY:
This photo was taken by photographer Philip Hosking in 2011. It pictures one the RAAF's multi-role fighters, and was taken at Avalon Airshow (prior to their full introduction to service). Express permission was given to use this photograph for these artworks. These details are provided on the frame label. The whole effect makes this product highly suitable as giftware or collectable merchandise.
CONSTRUCTION:
There are 20 different pieces combined to make this layered 3D Photo. Various high-quality prints onto matte photo paper are used (most suited for craft and manual handling). The fine details of each layer are artificially cut, but hand assembled, glued and reinforced in layers. Elements of the construction, including cardboard and foam-core backing, can be seen if viewed from sharp angles. However enough overlap of foreground and background pieces is provided to give a real 3D perspective from the viewer. Physical construction time of each copy takes up to two days (depending on complexity), but does NOT include the many hours of digital, computer setup work (done only once per photo product). I have refined the method over many years, with acid free glue and materials used, to ensure a long-lasting product. Prints use all genuine Epson materials.
FRAME:
The frame is supplied to me locally, and is custom made from raw timber (NOT a standard bulk moulding). For this Super Hornet photo, the provided frames have been made in black stained Oak (which still shows the timber grain). The box (aka shadowbox) frame with substantial depth is required to house the 3D product. A rear hanging wire is attached.
In addition, a "water-white" clear glass has been used to minimise reflections, and provide a 70% UV protection (specifically, UltraView UV70 glass by TruVue brand). This provides a much more transparent appearance due to a high light transmission and clear surface. However framed items should still be placed out of direct sunlight. Glass can be cleaned of fingerprints with a damp cloth using water or an ammonia-free glass cleaner, using small swirling motions.
DIMENSIONS:
Total outside frame dimensions:
Width: 505mm (about 20 inches)
Height: 340mm (about 13.5 inches)
Depth: 55mm
Weight: 4kg
